Photos of Nan's past can be seen below. WARNING! The following photos may be considered graphic by some viewers. Roll your mouse over the warning labels to view the photos.

Nan arrived at the rescue in 2008. As stated in the Perry County Tribune, "Imagine a horse that has probably been a mother many times but was left recently with a still-born foal on a neglected pasture in Ohio. The Humane Society was informed of a problem and found Nan." Later in the article they explain that "On Feb. 24, Nan arrived in an unbelievable condition being underweight by over 300 pounds. She had an infected cut on her right left, no hair on her tail, rain rot, and was suffering from complications from that still birth." Oh, one thing that we have failed to mention up until this point is that Nan is completely blind as well!

You read that correctly, except that she is now around 21, and one of two blind mares who currently live at WHINNY . She was surrendered to our rescue program in 2008. Nan's eyesight is completely gone in her left eye and she has limited, if any, sight in her right eye. During the hot & sunny summer days, we put sunblock on her face and lips to prevent sunburn. Eyedrops keep her eyes moist and clean of gunk.

Since she has arrived at WHINNY, Nan has learned alot! Mary has worked with her extensively to train her to voice commands. She understands what is being asked of her when she hears keywords such as "halter", "gate", etc. Even without eyesight, Nan enjoys a fabulous life of relaxation. She encounters minimal problems thanks to those who helped sponsor the blind horse pasture and walk-in shelter. Also, thanks to Gary, Nan and her friend Sky will not have to worry about tripping over any ruts. He took care of that problem for us in early June!

Nan is the first of the WHINNY Horses to have a monthly sponsor!
Nan is now sponsored by Cheryl and Stephen Popper.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Popper. We truly appreciate your support!

When you sponsor a WHINNY horse, you choose to play a role in its recovery and rehabilitation by donating money each month to its care . WHINNY is committed to its horses and your sponsorship helps us continue to be so. A sponsorship of $25.00 a month can make a difference. 100% of your money will be used on the horse of your choice. Your support of our organization is important to us.

If you would like to sponsor Nan by donating $25.00/month for her care, please click the button below.
