*CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
(COPD) or HEAVES
This disease develops gradually and the clinical signs are most
commonly seen in horses five years or older. At first the animal
has a cough or wheeze that may be more pronounced after exercise.
As the disease progresses, the coughing becomes more frequent and
a nasal discharge may be present. With chronic heaves, a
"heave line' may develop because of the extra effort
needed to exhale. The causes of heaves are not well defined. Some
reports indicate that it is an allergic response that is perhaps
due to molds. Dusty feeds greatly aggravate the the condtion.
Heaves is seldom seen in horses pastured year round. No treatment
is known that will result in complete recovery.

Don't weep for me My Lady,
My time with you was blessed.
The angel's wings embrace me now,
I've gone home to rest.
This 30+
blind mare was an innocent victim of abuse and neglect.
Upon her arrival at WHINNY Horse Rescue, she had a body score
of 1 of 6 . She was ataxic, weak and blind in both eyes. Her
heart and lung sounds were not normal. A murmur was detected, and
was in the attending vet's opinion, probably due to anemia.
The mare was severely infested with ticks. Unfortunately, the
mare was too weak from her emaciated condtion to recover and
collasped in her stall April 23,2006. She was euthanized
April 24,2006 to end her suffering.
