Alone I dare not climb; Why !
More people own horses today than at any other time in American
history. Today domestic horses are found throughout the world, with a
total population estimated at 60 million. Many are lucky and are owned by
loving individuals or families, but huge numbers are not. Hundreds of
horses stand forgotten and uncared for in fields and barns all over our 50
states, facing years of hunger, thirst, parasite infestation, and illness.
Hundreds more end up in auction barns or inhumane slaughter houses. Nobody
wants them anymore. Not all are old, sick or "used up". Many are young,
healthy animals that didn't meet the needs or expectations of the people
who owned them.
How ! My husband Bill and
I came face to face with
abuse and neglect while looking for trail horses for his newly opened
Jones Riding Academy in 1999. It was heartbreaking to see these once
beautiful animals subjected to so much torment by cowardly
insensitive owners. Bill purchased some of these horses. I
watched and learned while my husband's skilled hands healed them,
transforming these pitiful creatures of abuse into beautiful
horses. He still owns them today and they reward him for his
kindness by giving 100% in everything he asks of
them. A year later, he purchased a
young gelding we named Blaze , that would start the wheels turning in W.H.I.N.N.Y.'s
direction. It was while caring for Blaze that I realized that there was a
need in this area for a facility that would take in horses in need,
rehabilitate them, and find them homes where they could live out the rest
of their lives in dignity
.When ! In the summer of 2002, W.H.I.N.N.Y. acquired its first horse . Through monies donated by friends, family and animal lovers, the construction of a barn began. Jones Riding Academy held a wiener roast in the fall of 2002 to introduce W.H.I.N.N.Y. and to gain community support for its cause. The money raised during the event was donated to W.H.I.N.N.Y. to fund more construction of the barn. The outpouring of support was enough to convince me that W.H.I.N.N.Y. could be an asset to the community. Where ! . W.H.I.N.N.Y. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located on 92+ acres in Perry County, Ohio, approximately 28 miles southwest of Zanesville, Ohio, and 60 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio. What ! W.H.I.N.N.Y. is an acronym for " Why horses in need...need you". We offer refuge, rehabilitation and adoption to horses in need. Who
